so how much are the digital gauges your using? Is there a vac gauge that works with a PDA? I would love to mount a Zodiac to my dash and have multiple displays for different things.

I would appreciate some help for anyone who might know about this situation.

I recently bought a new Chevy Aveo for my wife (1.6 'EcoTec' engine). She tends to drive with a somewhat heavy foot, so I want to install a vacuum gauge in it. I looked everywhere in the engine compartment and I cannot find a single vacuum line to tee into! (I've installed vacuum gauges on other cars in the past and I know what vac lines typically look like - but here I see nothing, zip, zero, nada. I know better than to tap into the brake booster line.

Anybody here work for Chevy? Anyone familiar with this new engine setup?

Interessant. I have the 2.2L Ecotec, but I never actually looked to see if it had vacuum lines. I'll have to go look in the morning.

its an aveo? that means its ODBII since there were no aveo pre 1996.

just plug an odb fuel meter into it. you can get them on ebay pretty cheap I think.

Pardon my ignorance (I'm 'on the wrong side of fifty' and can remember owning cars with distributors that had points). I know what OBD is - but why are there no vacuum lines? Also, what will a "fuel meter" read? - and how does it compare with the readings of a vacuum gauge?

I don't know really but I know the data coming from the computer via the OBD interface can be used to calculate fuel economy. Hmm scanners are cheao but not sure if any of them will read out vaccum similar data.

as to why no vaccum? no idea :-)

...if you get too much "needle oscillation" at idle, you can install a "restrictor" (also called 'vacuum arrester') in the vacuum line which should dampen the needle movement.

...the "restrictor" can be just a small piece of smaller diameter tubing (thus a smaller inside diameter) inserted at the "vacuum source" end.

Doesn't needle oscillation indicate compression problems?

...yes and no, or simply: not always.

...if the oscillation "coincides" with the cylinders, then the answer is probalby yes, there's likely a compression problem. But, then again, it might also be: (a) vacuum gauge diagrapham sympathetically vibrating, or (b) 3 or 4 cylinder engine at low rpms, so there's a big "gully" in the vacuum level as each cylinder sucks air from the intake manifold...almost like "ripples" in the vacuum. That's why I suggested the restrictor...a first step toward diagnosis of "what's causing" the oscillation.

...if we were talking 6's or V8's I'd agree 100% on "problem" but things get 'interesting' on the smaller engines...especially a 3 cylinder!

I worked on an Aveo before, but I don't remember even seeing any vacuum lines? I bet the one from the brake booster would work, but you would have to tap in close to the engine as possible for a good source.
