Did we mention the volt?

The Volt is a marketing campaign, a big neon sign.
They have doughnuts?!?

Free donuts is better than digging in the trash behind the store, that's for sure. I'm there. I'll spend 40k, get a base model car with no real features to speak of, that is made from state of yesterday's art technology, and free donuts. Then I have to buy the coffee to wash them down. What a ripoff.

Oh it WILL be produced!

Why am I so sure? I know a few people that work for GM, either directly or in-directly and all indicators are they are getting reading and making plans for a massive re-tooling for The Volt. Flint Michigan (my old home town) will get some of the work.

Since I first posted this thread (OP) I have heard a lot of rumblings from GM workers. From everything I have been told, they are going forward with building this car. But we still do not know exactly what the FINAL product will look like- as many people have pointed out to me - all of the mules on the road today could be changed in mass production, they may not reflect exactly what the production car will be, and nobody REALLY knows if the car will priced in the $40,000 range or not- That's mostly what some GM engineers have told the media from what I have traced. The competition is also going to be building plug-in hybrids soon too. So, we really should not be so certain we know what the finally production Volt will look like and be sold for. These things still have time to change. Many details of this car are not certain right now, and it is rather unprecedented for GM/Chevy to ever be this open about any car they have made in history. Anything could be up and be unknown to all of us at this time. But indicators are they are starting to make moves to build the car. I base this on what people on the inside of GM are saying openly.

I hope Chevy does better with production and sales than its PR people did with market placement of the Volt. That $40,000 price projection, and the 230 mpg mileage estimate, were lame. Essentially, the Volt is still vaporware. GM built false expectations, and whatever it produces is going to be a major disappointment to a lot of people.

Serial Hybrid

Hi,

Here's an example of a serial hybrid that has a 750cc 2-cylinder engine that turns a Crown Victoria into a ~43mpg vehicle, and can pay for itself in 2 years.

I'm sorry but sandwiching a large electric motor between the internal combustion engine and transmission doesn't make a series hybrid. I don't care what they claim. This is a parallel hybrid. Same setup as honda's IMA.

If this was a true series hybrid, they won't need a 4 speed automatic gear box. We already know that the parallel hybrid is more efficient than series so using a smaller 750cc engine makes sense. I don't see why they're trying to market themselves as a series hybrid. Maybe thats the new buzz word everybody loves to hear.

...is that the REAL tricycle motor GM intends for the VOLT? Or, is it a prototype lash-up to test the chassis?

If you mean tjts1 post, that's a completely different car.

Hi,

How does a 750cc 2-cylinder "generator set" work as part of a parallel hybrid?
