I set my record distance tank earlier this month - 1000 km on 10.563 gal., averaging 58.84 mpg, in my xB. That's winter driving, running around to do grocery shopping, Home Depot visits, medical appts, etc. 1000 km. is 621.37 miles. I tanked up at 621.6 miles.
My biggest change was slowing down for much of this tank.

Got a crappy 17MPG average driving to school which is 3.4 miles round trip. The next 3 days I'll be biking because the weather is great.

Congrats!
I'm not sure we both have the same definition or experience of winter, but kudos on blowing the EPA away with a vehicle that looks like it has the aerodynamics of a brick.

Yeah, it definitely felt different. I glanced at my tach, and it was around 900 rpm.
Normally 35mph would put me at the low end of 4th (probably 1600rpm) or maybe 2100 or so in 3rd.
I decided that my new goal is going to be 24mpg - the EPA highway rating -this spring (or maybe summer) with my around town commute. Last summer 22.6 - 23.5 was my general range.
With 100lbs of sand in the bed and the cold weather, 21 is realistic right now and 22 is possible.

I know what winter is, having lived in AK, CO, and UT for 15 years. I have to admit CA winters are ridiculously mild. But if I can average 58.84 mpg now, I might be able to push 70 mpg in the Summer, and that would put a 750 mile tank into the realm of possibility.

you'd think calli's hot hot air in the summer would destroy your mpg

I had to risk my tank this PM as A. Jnr was late for his rock star training (guitar) so I had to cruise in the right hand (i.e. 'outside' in the correct side of the road world) lane instead of my usual trundle in the left.
And damn me if Helga didn't average more than she does at dawdle ? I 'harried' a dawdling BMW out of the way (empty left lane, move over you prat) and undertook a Mini Cooper S (you don't move, I go anyway - yeah turbo, eat soot).
By the time I turned off she was showing 68 mpg AVG compared to normally 65 at dawdle. Another benefit was that the lights were out on the junction so it was a normal roundabout.
Guess what ?
Traffic FLOWED BETTER.
EDIT - this was BEFORE I picked up Jnr. I don't bully or undertake when carrying Jnr. For a start there is the swearing to explain...

Hello -
My car got stuck in traffic today. I had the engine off at a stoplight to save gas. As the cross-light went yellow, I turned the ignition. There was no sound of the starter turning over. I set the emergency lights, got out of the car, and pulled the big 30 Amp "IGN" fuse in the fuse box in the engine bay. The fuse was good so I put it back in. After that the starter turned over and has been fine ever since. This makes me think it could be a wiring or ignition key/lock assembly problem. Maybe rats nibbled the wiring (it's happened before). It was as if I had not depressed the clutch, so maybe the clutch ignition safety circuit is failing.
I'm taking it for service on Friday, so hopefully they will find something wrong that they can fix. If they can't find anything wrong, then I will worry about turning off the engine at lights.

Carlo, Check your connections to both the starter and the ground to the block as well as frame. Being on the left cost you don't get the issues i get in Jersey with salt air and temp expansion terminal ends and corrosion is a problem if not maintained.
What you described is common had it happen to my truck once this year and my neighbor asked me for help his terminals were loose and a friend was stuck they had a lot of corrosion. I hope it is that easy of a fix for ya.

Whew, my mpg is back into the realm of reasonable. After one bad tank I just pulled off a 38mpg tank thanks to less snow and somewhat better temperatures. I can't wait for this winter to be over and new summer tires... I also can't wait until the ground thaws so I can get my garden going again. I'm looking at three boxes of seeds ready to go in the ground.
