Some more waste solvent information on some of the questions I'm getting.

This is a Becca waste solvent Recycler.

This is what the waste looks like before being recycled. What Body shops do is they usually have a 5 gallon container that the painter will dump all his left over base color and his solvent that he uses to clean his gun etc into. They then dump that into the recycler.

After 3 to 4 hrs the process is done and all you have left over is a hard chunk of dried paint called cake.

This a pic I took today of some recycled waste solvent that I will be running. As you can see its extremely clear to the point it looks like water.

The cost of electricity to Body Shop to make 1 gallon of waste solvent in my area is around .08 cents a gallon. The temperature range of distillation is 104*F to 394*F.

Testing some 75% waste solvent amounts at cooler temperature this morning 61*F . Ran fine through all loads with no other preheating. I'm finding as long as I know what the Body Shops main cleaning solvent is so I can look up a MSDS or SDS sheet I can make this work extremely well. I going to check the burn on top of the pistons with my Bore Scope this weekend.

Sorry for my ignorance on the subject, but how did you come up with the idea to use waste solvent as a fuel additive?

Kinda from my job from doing outside auto body paint sales. I call on 40 different customers. About 25 of them have solvent recyclers, and are always complaining about the large amounts of solvent that occurs over time. Everywhere I go there are gallons and gallons of the waste solvent in their shops stacking up. Eventually they will have a local waste solvent company pick up their extra waste solvent and dispose of it by burning it in a incinerator, but this cost them a pretty penny.

I kinda feel bad, I sell them the paint, cleaning solvent etc. and then take the waste for free.

So then I decided to do some experimenting with my trusty lawn mower and started running low amounts of solvent while watching closely the cylinder head temps and exhaust temps and also pulled apart the carb to make sure the Toluene,Acetone,Naptha wasn't eating the gaskets. Thats when I noticed the engine needed the solvent to be warmer to burn correctly. After seeing that it would burn decent I started building my waste solvent fuel system on my car and so far everything is working awesome!!!

Well I pulled the trigger and bought a Insight.

Its time to go for it and put what I learned into a lean burn hybrid.

That's cool but--

1. What's going to happen with the Talon? It's too nice to sit undriven.

2. What happens to the waste solvent if you don't use it for fuel?

Yes, that is my new ultimate question????

For now I'm going to keep the Talon and finish my testing. I plan on using the Talon a lot more this winter when the roads get slick and nasty. The Talon with my Blizzak tires is one of the most fun cars to drive in the snow.
The issue is I'm only going to drive x amount this year. So as of now I don't have a very good answer? I'm learning that the Insight needs to be driven for good battery health? I also want to get started on the Insights body and paint work this winter, so the Talon might be outside while the insight stays in the garage being worked on This should let me burn up a lot of waste solvent in the Talon. So I guess thats my plan for now.lol

Speaking of waste solvent I did another test at 48*F and still no issues. My new goal is to make a system for the Insight, something I have been working this weekend. If I can pull this off that would be most cool to be driving around at $0.02 cents per mile.

Stainless steel fuel lines or whatever people use for methanol fuel is probably a good idea. Toluene and acetone at high concentrations is probably bad for the fuel lines. I think it's not very much money, if you're burning solvent for free the fuel savings should add up pretty quickly.

You need to get the Talon on the dyno.

This is a concern for me. On my Talon everything was set up for methanol, so its good to go. On the Insight I need to look over the fuel system.
