Supposedly very doable, though.

I did that first thing when I started having problems last year. All the passages were completely clogged with carbon buildup. I am guessing the years of clogged passages somehow made the EGR valve go bad. The factory service manual has an electrical test for the EGR valve that I did, and it failed. I might try the Autozone EGR. I didn't know if they would carry those or not. But for less than half the price of OEM its worth a shot.
And I took a look at the Elio that you mentioned. I really hope these make it to production. This kind of car is exactly what people need. Simple, simple, simple. I want something small, lightweight, and easy for the DIY'er to work on. Thankfully it's not a hybrid, and its only $7k!

First 800-mile tank!!!
When I first started hypermiling, I remember thinking 50 mpg was going to be the upper limit for my car. Now that I've gone over 70 mpg, I know I'm just getting started. I have mods I still haven't even gotten to yet!
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this site. I couldn't have done it without y'all.

At least it's a 5-speed. You should be able to turn in some respecable numbers.

In other news, I'm sad to say I will soon be leaving Team Honda. The U.F.O. is up for sale. No particular reason other than it's time to thin the herd. (Too many cars taking up room at my garage.) I had a lot of fun with that car, and I know I'll miss it when it's gone -- lean burn in a lightweight aero bullet is MPG magic! But it makes more sense to keep the Firefly because it's only got ~30k kilometers on the clock, and the U.F.O. has ~280k.
I'll be doing one more fill-up this week to contribute to the team, (probably in the neighbourhood of ~88 mpg), then that's it from me!

Wow. You have developed quite a list of mods too. Nice work. Because of your very-high FE, over time your car will pay for itself in saved gas, depreciation, and insurance when compared to buying replacement lightly used cars.

That's really sensible. In some ways a person could look at the Insight as the "sexier" car (not that we care much) and want to keep it instead. But your calculation is the one I'd like to think I'd make too.

Finally a good "summer" fillup. If I hadn't done 60 miles of speed/mpg cruise control testing...
772 miles (record by 50)
11.639 gal
66.3 mpg (record by 3.8)
Up 2 places in Team Honda. (sorry WD40 and Pawtuckett)
10th to 6th in Top 10 mpg.
Just missed moving up in the Top 10 % over epa. Still at #8.
Our team is still solidly below Team Metro.

First time > 60 mpg...!
Went to Germany, had to fill up on the way back. Was aiming for a 1000 km tank but chickened out when I found a station that was open after having passed one that was unreachable due to road repair...
Sad thing too as the first 100 km or so on the new tank had an average of 3.0 l per 100 km or just below 80 mpg! And I had more than 5 liters in the tank... 1000 km would have been easy and have given me an even better FE record fill!
Ah well. Next tank will be good too if nothing strange happens.
As usual I was driving along with the right lane traffic most of the time, but I tried to max it out where possible (no speed limit om several stretches on the Autobahn!) but every time the speed got above 140 km/h someone pulled out from the slow lane right in front of me and I had to brake hard.
After 6 attempts or so I gave up; my eco mind could stand no more power wasted. I went on in the right lane and watched how the German-made cars roared by at sometimes over 200 km/h. It's a conspiracy

And here I'd been led to believe that the Germans have good lane discipline!

I should have used my HIDs, maybe.
Right lane discipline is no more what it used to be. Especially on the 3 and 4 lane Autobahn strecke; many simply refuse to use the right lane as there could be a semi or caravan way up ahead. Even if they don't go fast at all themselves.
But to be fair the weather was hot; around 32 degrees Celcius (90 F) so maybe that distracted them. There were several accidents too.
The majority of German drivers don't go faster than 130 km/h even where there is no limit. Around many ramps and all major connections the speed is reduced to 130 or 100, so you'd have to drop back frequently anyway.
I visited some friends who took me along in their car, and the driver went up to about 160 km/h where possible. We seldom got passed, but had to brake a lot, for other cars and for the speed limits.

75.2mpg for 2 gallons over 155 miles. I've decided to start filling up to only 3.5 gallons max to save on weight.
Hypermiling is probably the best survival tool you can have. If you can learn to average 65mpg in most any manual car you can save more than money. Imagine being stranded with half a gallon of gas in the middle of the dessert. You could try to survive on cactus, or P&G at 20mph to civilization. I'm surprised most survivalists haven't picked up on this. There solution seems to be to stockpile a couple dozen barrels of oil.

Haha I think about that all the time!! If there was a zombie apocalypse how many tanks would it take me to get to a certain long distance destination? From there the questions spiral outward and let the daydreaming begin
