My family and I visited the New Alchemy Institute many times, way back in the 70's. They are a model for how we need to live now.

At that time I was a construction worker (foundation to finish work) at Cerro Gordo.
https://www.ic.org/directory/cerro-gordo-community/
Quote:
We are a dog-free community founded on ecological values, including organic land care & gardening. We practice sustainable forestry on 1100+ acres. Most of our forest land is in a Healthy Forests Reserve Program, and we're in the process of doing a conservation easement on most of the remaining land, which is largely oaks & meadows. Our houses are clustered into two neighborhoods, surrounded by these forests and meadows, with many seasonal streams. We operate as a Cooperative, sharing maintenance of the water systems & roads. Please note: in accordance with our state/county zoning agreements, dogs cannot live here (and we love it that way).
I see that today they have 22 members and six non-member residents. When downtown gets 5G, I need to think about that.

Dog-free won't work for me long term. I'll eventually want a mutt of some kind or another.

A dog-whistle for cat ladies?

In the 1970s Cerro Gordo's proponents were divided between the equestrians and railroaders. But over the decades, the railroad shut down the steam excursion train and the track was removed.

Cottage Grove's "Blue Goose" steam train route is now Row River Trail

Quote:
The switch from passenger-carrying railroad to bike path still draws grim looks from many Cottage Grove residents, especially those with experience in tourism-related enterprises. The potential draw of a 31-mile steam-train ride leaving from just off Interstate 5 and passing through the scenes of three major Hollywood movies – “Stand By Me,” “Emperor of the North Pole” and “The General” – seems obvious.

But to take advantage of something like that, capital is required, and in the late 1980s this little timber-products town was on the ropes. The Bureau of Land Management’s rails-to-trails project was a bird in the hand, and any plan to preserve the Goose was very much in the bush. And so the Oregon Pacific and Eastern railroad spur ended a nearly 90-year run by becoming an exceptionally long, scenic and gently graded bike path.
There was supposed to be a commuter railcar to downtown Cottage Grove. I'd have wanted a McKeen rail car, like what used to run from Falls City to West Salem.

That's what happens when government gets put in charge of fixing global warming most Americans understand this and that's why only 12% of voters are stupid enough to think that making the government bigger and putting them in charge of fixing global warming is a good idea.

Excellent new Chris Martenson essay.
.
"The widest wealth gap in human history
Massive income inequality
Entire generations saddled with high debts and low opportunities
Broken “markets” that have become policy signaling devices for the central planners, offering no price discovery or reliability to investors
Ripping the last oil and gas out of the ground as fast as possible while not using any of it to build out a sustainable energy infrastructure
Losing species at a rapid pace that nobody can comprehend let alone predict what the effects might be"

As queen Pelosi once said:
"We have the votes and that's all that matters"
(To pass universal health care)

The US government already has way more power than they need to fix global warming. They control the NRC and DoE who has in their possession enough depleted uranium to power the country for at least 700 years.
We could be like France making kwhs for 75 grams of CO2, but no.

The one thing the vast majority of Americans can agree on is not to make the government to fix something.
The most recent example, government mandated health care. It more expensive than ever, is the number one reason people go bankrupt in the US and is harder to see a Dr than it was before it was passed.

Edit: queen Pelosi said she isn't voting for the new green deal.

"Ultimately, the shift towards a regenerative human civilization and increased human and planetary health will require a majority of global citizens to assume full responsibility for their co-creative involvement in shaping humanity’s and the planet’s future. To a greater or lesser extent, we are all designers of this future. We can intentionally choose to create healing relationships in the communities and ecosystems in which we participate"
