From my 3rd-world perspective it doesn't make any sense to scrap this old beater. It could still serve me reasonably.

I totally agree. That's why I had started stockpiling old eco cars here. But reality is there is no demand for them here, and the expense to send them anywhere else makes it a waste of time on my behalf. If I could save them for people that wanted them and break even I would be perfectly fine with that. I ended up with a lot of old eco cars nobody here wanted. And weren't worth shipping anywhere else. So now I just have to let them go. It sucks, but I can't be trying to finance a fleet of cars that nobody wants, that's just a bad move.

I've thought of myself as a conservationist, more than a restorer, over the years. Slowing the inevitable so others (with more resources) can benefit. More lately it looks like the next to go will be the Clark Cortez motor home, hopefully up the valley where it will be parted out, the appliances to a new 'tiny home' and the drivetrain subframe preserved as a [trailerable] unit plus 100s of dollars in cash.

Years past there was a VW-only wrecking yard in Rickreall, OR until Polk County announced he had to turn over the content of his yard every 6 months. That wasn't a viable model and it's gone.

Augmenting rides to make them more familiar and less discomfiting is nothing new.

Of course, the idea used to be making other people feel better about your odd ride. Now it's about making the buyer feel better- like the CVTs with paddle shifters to change "gears."

Not even to Africa, Afghanistan or Paraguay? That's bad...

I thought the paddle shifters were to make you laugh when descending a hill on a road with many hairpins. Worked for me
At least for a while. Even mirror mazes get boring. In the end I just kicked it back to D and only pulled the paddles when I had to use the brakes too frequently otherwise.

Not sure this ranks as an eco-car (big, but an interesting shape).

I started seeing BMW i3 all over the place early this year. Meh. Kinda ugly. Cool aero, though. Have been suddenly seeing the new Mitsu Mirage everywhere... several f them everyday all over Southern California. Seems to be selling well. Don't know if I have ever seen the new Nissan Micra on the road.

I will rebuild Black and Green over decades as parts die, until it becomes a different car of roughly the same shape and color. My minimum fuel economy goal is 55 mpg while averaging posted speed limits. I generally top 60 mpg. See also my Honda manual transmission specs thread.
